A mobile boot camp is a crash-course session usually spanning 2 – 3 days, whereby participants will gain insights on mobile application development as well as acquire practical skills on the use of current platforms, frameworks and tools used for the development of mobile applications.

More than 100 information technology developers (programmers) and students attended the last event in July 2009. The camp will be held under the theme; “Fostering local content through mobile technology.”

Charges for this 3-day event are:

Students: 700 /= (inclusive of lunch for the 3 days)
Non-students: 1500/= (inclusive of lunch for the 3 days)

The TED Global 2009 Fellows - Awesome people!

It has been 10 days since my return from Oxford,UK from the TEDGlobal 2009 conference. I am still having the TED CRASH as they call it. Today the 8th of August is my Bday as well as TEDxNairobi.  Stay tuned for my story!

The sessions comprised both theoretical and practical whereby participants gained an insight on mobile computing technologies. The first day of the Mobile Boot Camp consisted of plenary talks from experts in the field of mobile technologies. The second and third day of the Mobile Boot Camp were breakout lab sessions that covered Beginner J2ME, Intermediate J2ME, Python and Windows Mobile. The University’s inaugural Mobile Boot Camp was held was held on 28th and 29th of November, 2008. More than 100 information technology developers (programmers) and students attended the event. Strathmore Research and Consultancy Centre (SRCC) hosted the event in collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT).

This year the university will hold the mobile boot camp on the 9th to 11th July, 2009. The camp will be held under the theme; “Mobile Applications for Development in Africa“. The event will be capped off with a mobile development competition, inviting mobile applications in the fields of M-Learning, M-Health and M-Agriculture.

Today marked the 4th day of this program. I will be meeting up with Micheal Gordon tomorrow morning to see how we can work together on the Mobile Boot Camp which will be taking place on the 9th – 11th of July at Strathmore University.

We are approaching the day when we no longer need to carry traditional mobile devices. Imagine a world where we can snap photos by simply gesturing with our fingertips, dial a number using digits projected into the palms of our hand, or view tag-clouds projected on a person we have just met. While this may all sound like science fiction, that future scenario is not too far away. In fact, MIT’s Media Lab recently launched a fascinating demo at TED showcasing their vision of the future.

This event took place at the KICC and engaged bank customers by inviting them to attend the exhibition and experiening the new services available today through the wide range of new payment technologies being offered by banks.

Nathan Eagle, a Research Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute gave a lecture on Thursday, 12th February between 2 and 4pm. Nathan’s research is on applying machine learning and network analysis techniques to large human behavioral datasets generated by mobile phones.
